Showing and telling: using significant, concrete details drawn from the senses to reveal information and meaning

“The scariest moment is always just before you start.” ― Stephen King, “On Writing”
This assignment requires you to write an original short story of 4-6 pages (1000-1500 words). It should demonstrate your learning about character, structure, detail, point of view, and other elements fundamental to fiction writing. It should reflect your reading by observing the stylistic standards exemplified in the short published works we’ve been studying. It should aim to be “literary” fiction, distinct from “popular” or “genre” fiction such as fantasy, romance, or similar forms generally crafted with a reliance on formulaic conventions.
Evaluation Criteria

Showing and telling: using significant, concrete details drawn from the senses to reveal information and meaning
Well-developed, believable characters, interactions, and authentic dialogue
Setting conveyed through the description and character interaction to establish a sense of place, a believable fictional world
Consistent and appropriate point of view.
Time: a sense of when this story is taking place, the pacing is appropriate
Plot: conflict and complication, crisis, resolution
Ending: a clear ending that seems appropriate to the story (not tacked on)
Creative title
Creativity: significant thought given to originality and the creative process
Story is free from spelling, syntactical, grammatical, and other mechanical errors
Story meets length and formatting requirements
Of course, no plagiarism or self-plagiarism (submitting work that’s yours but is written for another class or purpose other than this assignment), are automatic disqualifiers with serious consequences.

Your Portfolio Project is due this week. Your paper should be 4-6 pages (not including the title or reference pages) based on current population health workforce trends and professional development related to population health careers. In this paper you will research and explore the positions/career options within population health, why those careers are vital to population health strategy and initiatives, and professional development opportunities available to those working in population health jobs.
You may find it helpful to conduct an initial search of population health careers via sites such as Indeed, LinkedIn, or ZipRecruiter. Familiarize yourself with the different titles and job responsibilities. It is also recommended that you review the material covered in Module 1 that pertains to the population health workforce.
When researching and writing, answer the following questions:
What are three trending careers/positions within population health? (One must include research/data collection duties.)
What are some projections for the future of these careers?
What education and experience are required for these careers?
What role do these positions play in promoting population health/wellness?
What special professional development opportunities exist within population health? Review this example from the CDC.
Are any special certifications recommended/required in order to enter or advance within these careers?
In addition to completing the narrative portion, you must create an infographic or flyer that highlights one of the careers/positions you covered within the paper. Include data that you feel is most important for a comprehensive review of this position; consider what it entails and the impact it has on population health. This visual item should be placed in an appendix. You should use one of the following free programs for your visual element:
Canva
Piktochart
PicMonkey
Requirements:
The complete paper should consist 4-6 pages, excluding the required title page, reference page, and appendix.
You must include at least six credible sources, four of which must be scholarly sources. The CSU Global Library is a good place to find these references. (The course textbook does not count for one of the scholarly sources.)
The CSU Global Library Guide has a research guide for Healthcare Management and Administration, along with access to databases, videos, and company and industry information.

Then, analyze how race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, and gender intersect and impact the event itself, the coverage of the event, and the event’s results.

This option provides you with an opportunity to integrate race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, and gender categories in the context of a major current event. Following these general instructions is an example; always reach out to your instructor when you have any questions.
Choose a current event that is making national or international headlines; your instructor can help you decide. It might be a story about an election, a natural disaster, the global economy, a highly publicized criminal trial, or an event in the entertainment industry.
Then, analyze how race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, and gender intersect and impact the event itself, the coverage of the event, and the event’s results. For example, if you decide to look at mass shootings in the United States, you will discuss who the shooters are (race, ethnicity, class, gender) and how the media portrays them (race, ethnicity, class, gender) as well as the victims (race, ethnicity, class, gender), etc. How old are the perpetrators and the victims? How quickly was the media to cover the story? Who are the reporters (race, gender)?
This is an analytical research paper where you will be following the case/event and using scholarly resources to guide your critical thinking throughout your report. That is, support statements with evidence.
The portfolio project is an 8-10-page research paper (approximately 3,500 words). Your paper must be properly cited and formatted according to the CSU Global Writing Center.Links to an external site. Your final paper will be graded not only on content but also on the quality of your writing, including syntax and grammar. It is highly recommended that you closely proofread your assignment before submission.
Final Paper Instructions:

Your paper must be at 8-10 pages in length, not counting the title and reference pages, which you must include.
The paper should synthesize current, relevant research on your topic from at least 5 scholarly sources. The CSU Global LibraryLinks to an external site. is a great place to find sources!
Offer your conclusions regarding how best to manage the issue (i.e., your informed opinion on the issues raised).

Your task is to come up with reasonable accommodations for a person with a specific disability to attend the activity noted in your colleagues’ posts.

The objective of this discussion is to reflect on how organizations make accommodations for people with disabilities and are ADA-compliant.
Before beginning your assignment, review the following article:
What Is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?Links to an external site.
Before you begin your initial post, complete the following exercise:
Write a disability on a separate sheet of paper. You can use anything as an example: a visible disability (immobility, for example) or an invisible disability (such as Asperger’s).
Next, write out everything that comes to mind regarding stereotypes for this disability. If you can, also try to include some idea of how you came to know the stereotype(s). Movies, the news or other media, and personal experiences all count for this category.
Then, come up with some activities you have experienced in some of your workplaces, such as a general workshop of any kind, company picnic, or even something casually organized like getting together for a social event after work. You can base the event on either your current or past job, or on a story you’ve heard from someone else.
For your Initial Post, write a short, two- or three-paragraph reflection on the exercise above. You can write this out numerically (one-by-one) or in paragraph form. In your responses to colleagues, you will come up with reasonable accommodations for the disabilities noted in their posts. You will likely have to ask people several questions, and you might have to do a little research on the ADA site to help you with solutions. Your task is to come up with reasonable accommodations for a person with a specific disability to attend the activity noted in your colleagues’ posts. For example, if the event is to attend a football game and the assigned disability is blindness, you will need to outline accommodations for a blind person attending a football game.

Your interpretation should be expressed in an argument that shows how your chosen photographs grapple with and work with the subject in order to give the viewer larger meanings, perspectives, and new ways of seeing.

Write a 1,250- to 1,500-word essay that advances an interpretation of a photographic series of your choice from the winners and shortlists of the World Photography Awards (2012-2022).
Your essay should demonstrate your close reading skills by explicating visual elements in a photographic series, explaining how particular choices within the photographs contribute to shape your understanding of the subject at hand. At its core, you should be able to answer the fundamental question of close reading: How does the presentation of the content inform and ultimately shape our understanding of it? (How does the way it’s being shown to us reveal something about the subject worth thinking about?)
Most series contain 6-8 photographs; while you can (and should) reference multiple, you should focus on 2-3 photographs to do a visual close reading and write about at length. The artist’s brief summary of the series can be found above the images which provides a basic level of context—so it is then up to you to uncover details within the series that contribute to a greater understanding.
Your interpretation should be expressed in an argument that shows how your chosen photographs grapple with and work with the subject in order to give the viewer larger meanings, perspectives, and new ways of seeing. Explain why we should see the choices made by the artist as strategic ones for addressing the content. • Unlike the Literacy Narrative in Unit 1, the Close Reading Essay must be written in standard academic English and should have a clearly articulated thesis. All body paragraphs should have strong topic sentences with clear transitions and close textual analyses. For general advice on writing the Close Reading Essay, consult the following entries in The Carolina Reader: the Student Guide to the Close Reading Essay, Mike Bunn’s “How to Read Like a Writer,” and Signs.
• For analyzing visual texts in particular, see Dan Monahan and Richard Barsam’s Looking at Movies as well as Jenae Cohn’s “Understanding Visual Rhetoric.”
• Your Close Reading Essay must be 1,250 to 1,500 words in MLA format. You may choose to bring in 1 or 2 outside sources for this assignment in order to provide context for your chosen series—but keep it brief and site your source according to MLA rules of formatting.
