In Poe’s “Ligeia” and Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown,” each protagonist struggles to understand (or doesn’t work hard enough to understand, but assumes things about) his wife. Choose one story: explain how each speaker or main character describes/explains his wife to the reader, and what each wife seems to symbolize. What happens to each wife in the story, and why?
